Former Olympic wrestler Daniel Cormier continued his undefeated tear through MMA’s heavyweight division by overcoming his biggest challenge to date in legendary veteran Josh Barnett for the Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix Championship.  The experienced Barnett has defeated some of the best heavyweights in the world in promotions such as the UFC, Pride, Pancrase, and Strikeforce.

It is indeed a huge feather in the cap for Cormier

In the past week, previously #5 and #6 ranked Marlon Sandro and Dustin Porier, respectively, were unseated.

First, Daniel Straus defeated Sandro via a convincing three round decision. Straus will have a chance at revenge as he looks to face the winner of Bellator’s championship bout between Pat Curran and Patricio Freire; two men with victories over Straus.

With his performance in upsetting Dustin Poirier during tonight’s main event on UFC on FUEL TV 3, Chan Sung Jung “The Korean Zombie” might have just become the most talented and exciting UFC featherweight not named Jose Aldo. I do not know who could disagree.

Clean punches, flying knees, ground and pound, elbows, reversals, submissions…this fight really had just about everything. Jung had earned his place in

What Will the Heavyweight Landscape Look Like After UFC 146?

May 9th, 2012 by

If you consider the UFC’s heavyweight division to be the best in the world, and you should, then UFC 146 is sort of like the Kentucky Derby (I’m tired of Super Bowl references) for the big guys of the sport. Last week, we finally saw Dana White’s blood pressure go down, along with the announcement of the newly reshuffled 146 card following Overeem-gate. For those of you who don’t know, the heavyweight champ was scheduled to face top ranked opponent Alistair Overeem; that was until the challenger’s blood test came back with the testosterone levels of Sylvester Stallone, if he was a centaur and running in the Preakness (that’s two horse race references in one paragraph, a record). No worries though, a new and certainkly worthy challenger has risen. With that settled, the fight night air is now crisp with questions, predictions, and pugilistic prognoses.

Long dominated by legendary champion Anderson Silva, the middleweight division is quickly becoming one of the most exciting and stacked divisions for top competitors.

Brian Stann recently rebounded from his disappointing loss to Chael Sonnen with a first round domination of veteran Alessio Sakara. Also entering the fray is Alan Belcher who turned a lot of heads on UFC on FOX when he engaged Rousimar Palhares on the ground and eventually earned the TKO victory via ground and pound. Long considered a hot prospect

It was said that if Nathan Diaz defeated Jim Miller, he would be next in line for the UFC lightweight championship. Diaz has certainly earned that place. After dropping back down to the lightweight division, Diaz has simply looked to be on a different level than his opposition. For the UFC on FOX headliner, that meant staying ahead of perennial contender Miller, and then being the first to finish Miller when he utilized his lanky arms for a second round guillotine submission.

UFC on Fox: Diaz vs. Miller – Main Card Preview

May 3rd, 2012 by

Perhaps because of his nondescript name, UFC lightweight Jim Miller hasn’t always received as much attention as his record would suggest he should. That might change this Saturday at New Jersey’s Izod Center under the biggest spotlight of Miller’s MMA career, but only if he can get past a big roadblock in the form of Nate Diaz.

Miller and Diaz will face off in the main event of the second UFC on Fox broadcast of 2012, an event that promises intrigue on several fronts. Not only could it go a long way toward cementing the top contender status of several fighters, it’s also another test of the UFC brand, as the men at the top of this card probably have the least mainstream name recognition of any to appear on Fox thus far.
